Dubai the Beloved Country: how the Guptas broke South Africa
If the Gupta family came to South Africa to steal state money and be fabulously wealthy, we could undo this tragic chapter of our history as a bad episode in which we could learn.
But now it is evident that they have a devastating impact on our democracy, our freedom, our economy and our political culture.
The presence of the toxic Gupta, their subversion of our public discourse and the commitment of politicians and officials have torn our national fabric and take a long time to undo.
I am one of a group of journalists who must appear in court today to seek protection from a Gupta replacement. The last time I was threatened as a journalist during the bad end of the 1980s, when the PW Botha regime tried to neutralize, literally and figuratively.
ANC governments since 1994 have never been given the impression that they are under siege. And the Gupta arrived and took over.
Black First Earth First (BLF), a small group of watchers who recently learned, funded by the Gupta, abused last week two major publishers and we have threatened some of us by name.
It was that same little band that recently attacked the people who gathered near the SaxeWold Gupta fortress.
White journalists are called “racist” and “Gupta Askaris” black critics and threaten us to “treat” at home and our “place of worship”.
The fact that the Gupta revealed emails described the Gupta brothers as anti-Black racist – a brother Gupta even called an employee a black monkey – BLF makes the campaign more transparent.
Investigative journalists have established that the unprecedented assault of fake – real false – and campaigns in the sudden media we are experiencing have their roots in Gupta aligned circles.
They also fund a website publication called WMCLeaks on Facebook and used as a basis for launching mass attacks on Twitter.
The television channel Gupta, ANN7, is a rough and malicious propaganda tool, little attention by the facts and is used to attack critical Gupta and Zuma.
However, Gupta toxicity goes far beyond propaganda and the destruction of free speech and decent and open discourse.
Take the case of Mosebenzi Zwane, Minister of Mineral Resources.
We know that the MEC Free State measure helped the Gupta to get their hands on a multi million rand dairy farm and we know that some 30 million state farm money was then revived to pay for the controversial Gupta wedding in Sun City in 2013.
We have good reason to believe that the Gupta were behind the designation of Zwane as minister of mineral resources, and we know that they were then taken to Europe to help them buy a mine that deals with the state.
We know that they helped pay their medical expenses and our common sense tells us that they made him rewrite the Mining Charter so the Gupta now qualify as disadvantaged black entrepreneurs. (Arrived in South Africa in 1993.)
However Zwane is still firmly in his position of power; As we say, it is on the front lines during the ANC political conference as if it were the most normal thing in the world.
We know that the Gupta, with the help of representing the son of President Jacob Zuma Duduzane, offered to Mcebisi Jonas R600 million and the post of Minister of Finance if he was ready to make his call.
There is nothing. No research, no processing.
Several other politicians and senior CNA officials have told us similar stories, and nothing happened.
The Gupta were corrupt and compromised several promising and talented politicians and personalities, such as Brian Molefe.
In fact, the Gupta can take a lot of credit for tearing down the oldest liberation movement on the continent and turning it into one of the parties at war with themselves.
